The RPMI team works closely with each customer to bring an innovative solution to every application. Below is the customary process RPMI makes available with our Directed Energy Deposition (DED) Manufacturing Services:
- Each Customer will supply the RPMI Team a candidate part application, such as a 3D CAD model. (.stp or .x_t work best)
- The RPMI Team will review each application and work closely to finalize the DED part design while suggesting any additional considerations to reduce lead time and cost.
- With a final scope and order, RPMI will manufacture the one off part supplying the necessary materials, tool code generation, and laser machine time for a quick turnaround.
- The Customer and the RPMI Team will devise further processing steps, such as HIP, Heat Treat, etc.
- The initial product is then ready for Customer evaluation and testing.
- Future steps will conclude if any additional actions are required to define a qualified process for production.

WORK ENVELOPE
MULTI-AXIS
RPMI Laser Systems provide 5-axis laser solutions in order to fabricate complex part geometries to near net shape. Unlike powder bed technologies, our multi-axis systems can orient a part in such a manner that may reduce or eliminate the need for excessive support material.
Additionally, selective features (such as ports, bosses, flanges) may be directly added to simplified castings or forgings to reduce material waste, machining time, and overall improve a part lead time.

PARAMETERS
DED provides a variety of options, our team will identify one of our many parameter sets that best matches the material, part geometry, and its application. The grid fin shown below was produced with different parameter sets, resulting in different feature definition and build times. Each option provides various opportunities and benefits.
MATERIALS
There are many alloys and materials that have been successfully deposited with RPMI's DED technology. With a small melt pool, rapid cooling rate, and controlled process, the deposited material exhibits a desirable and repeatable microstructure. Typically the mechanical properties of the deposited material are better than castings and approach wrought-like material properties.

GRADIENTS
DED has blown open the door to what is possible with new parts and applications. With multiple powder feeder systems on each laser system, RPMI can create multi-material deposits by selectively mixing or transitioning alloys within a single build. The images below reveal a single blade that comprises Inconel 625, Alloy 230, and Inconel 718 all in one freeform build.
Our Quality.
RPMI is committed to exceeding our customer’s expectations in all aspects of our business. Maintaining a robust quality management system is critical to this commitment. RPMI maintains a quality management system that is certified to both the AS9100 and ISO 9001 quality standards providing our customers confidence that we have the processes in place to ensure the highest level of quality. Additionally, RPMI works very closely with our customers to gather relevant information early in the process allowing us to fully understand the customer’s needs while at the same time educating our customers on the capabilities and benefits of the services we offer.
Our Facility.
3D metal printing and laser repair are on a rapid growth rate and we didn't leave anything to question. Our new facility was designed so we are ready to grow with you. Let us get your application from a one off piece to production!
RPMI takes national security very serious and is registered with the U.S. Department of State, Directorate of Defense Trade Controls to be compliant with US International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
